Full Time AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer: Sarah Bordeaux has been volunteering with the Greenbrier Learning Center since July 2008. As an AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer, Ms. Bordeaux focuses on 4 major goals: 1. formalizing and coordinating the volunteer program, 2. assisting in grant management, 3. coordinating and developing the Parent Program, and 4. developing and implementing an effective communication strategy. Prior to her position with GBLC, Ms. Bordeaux was an active member of James Madison University’s Service Learning Department, participating and leading Alternative Spring Break trips, both of which were focused on helping underserved youth, sparking her love and interest in community service. She graduated from James Madison University with a B.A. in History with minors in Art History and Africana Studies.
Full Time Learning Links AmeriCorps Volunteers: Since August 2009 Meghan Gregg has been serving at the Greenbrier Learning Center in Arlington, Virginia. As a full time AmeriCorps Links Volunteer, Ms. Gregg promotes education and youth leadership through a community based approach. Prior to her involvement with GBLC, Ms. Gregg has worked with at-risk youth and participated in youth empowerment programs including The Boys & Girls Club of Deland, Florida, and an after-school program based in Pierson, Florida – a community comprised of migrant workers. Continuing her passion to serve others, Ms. Gregg has volunteered abroad. During one of her travels, she met and befriended a rural village in Costa Rica and has since taught English to middle school aged children as well as overseen a book drive. She graduated from Stetson University with a B.A. in International Studies, with a concentration in Latin American Studies, and a minor in Spanish.
Full Time Learning Links AmeriCorps Volunteer: Kara Kottemann has been serving with the Greenbrier Learning Center since August 2009. As a Learning Links AmeriCorps Volunteer, she serves children in the three most important aspects of their lives: at school, afterschool, and with the family in a community setting. Prior to starting with GBLC, Ms. Kottemann was a preceptor for the Grassroots Environmentalism class at Truman State University and taught her peers about grassroots campaigning in the community. She also developed and taught a program linking art and environmentalism for elementary school students during her time in college. She graduated with a BA in Biology and a minor in Environmental Studies from Truman State University.
Full Time Learning Links AmeriCorps Volunteer: Dana Smith has been serving with the Greenbrier Learning Center since August 2009. As an AmeriCorps volunteer, Ms. Smith works in three critical aspects of a child’s life: education, family, and the community. Prior to her work at GBLC, Ms. Smith actively led and participated in programs with a commitment to working with youth in developing self-esteem and long-term life skills, including being a camp counselor for the Young Chefs Academy and creating a cheerleading squad for her Girl Scout Gold Award. She graduated with a BA in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with coursework specifically relevant to Child Psychology.
Full Time Learning Links AmeriCorps Volunteer: Mary Knox Zealy began serving with Greenbrier Learning Center in August 2009 through a direct-service AmeriCorps position. Here, she serves students in 3rd through 5th grade to bridge the gaps between formal education, family, and community involvement. She provides these crucial developmental services at Randolph Elementary School and Virginia Gardens. Prior to her position with GBLC, Ms. Zealy interned with the state-wide adoption and foster care agency, Children’s Home Society, in Greensboro, North Carolina. At CHS, Ms. Zealy focused on finding adequate locations for interviewing and filming children to raise awareness and promote “forever homes.” Continuing her passion of working with and further developing youth, Ms. Zealy started a volleyball camp for young teenagers as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award Project. She has also been a volleyball coach for middle school teams in hopes of promoting as well as instilling teamwork and dedication in young athletes. She graduated from North Carolina State University with a B.A. in Sociology, with coursework in Mental Health, and a minor in Business Administration.
