About GBLC
Originating from the requests of parents, teachers, and community members seeking after-school, academic tutoring for the children of our neighborhood, the Greenbrier Learning Center (GBLC) opened its doors in 1994. The Arlington Community Foundation, the Greenbrier Baptist Church, and several local corporations partnered to create GBLC, which found a home in the centrally located Greenbrier Baptist Church. While GBLC is not a faith-based organization, the use of the church for one of the elementary programs and our main office has given us both visibility and credibility in the community.
Our goals are:
- to provide academic enrichment and tutoring to improve our students' academic performance
- to foster responsible decision-making and develop inter-personal, social and leadership skills in our youth and families
- to increase parental involvement in their children's education
- to promote the needs of our community.
As a community-driven organization, GBLC continues to expand our programs and services in order to meet the growing and changing needs of south Arlington.
GBLC has grown from an organization with one after-school program serving only nine elementary school children to an organization that runs seven programs and reaches over 145 children, youth and families, and over 22 cooperating after-school organizations in Arlington.
GBLC is one of 15 organizations serving middle school students highlighted in the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region's Spirit of Giving Guide 2006. We were also featured in the 2005 Catalogue for Philanthropy, as well as in the October 2005 Washingtonian Magazine as one of 40 outstanding organizations serving children in the Washington metropolitan area. We are also proud to announce that we have been recognized in the December 2007 Washingtonian Magazine as "one of a dozen small local charities that have earned praise for both effectiveness and efficiency."
Greenbrier Learning Center's mission is to promote education, youth leadership and strong families through structured enrichment programs beyond the school day. Utilizing a community-driven approach, we foster academic achievement and personal growth among our after-school students, act as a resource for youth and adults, and increase collaboration among service providers in Northern Virginia.
